Hidden LA: Chinatown and Olvera Street

IMG_7119Text from my original event post:

The crux of Los Angeles history and the merging of two distinct cultures, this Hidden LA walk will combine urban walking and photography with historical Olvera Street and Chinatown.

I still can’t believe how much work I put into this event, how much drama happened behind the scenes and the sheer madness that is life that came together to make this such a successful event.

4,579 miles, 9 National Parks and 9 States: Summer Road Trip Photo Gallery

IMG_56644,579 miles, 9 states (California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Nevada), 9 National Parks, 2.5 weeks with one happy and adventure seeking puppy.

The road was filled with strange interactions with relatives, a speeding ticket in Phoenix while driving to Sedona, managing my sanity while listening to awful audio books (and many good ones, as I’m an audio book junkie) and text messages to loved ones. But, through it all, I made it through smarter, with a better photography portfolio and a deeper sense of who I am and what I want.

Wine tasting in Paso Robles, Camping in Big Sur and Exploring Monterey, California

IMG_2873I love to travel.

Period.

There are no exceptions to this rule. There is nothing that makes me happier than the feeling of being on an airplane or being at the helm of my car with my maps and the puppy. It just makes sense.

So, when we decided that the most logical and completely reasonable thing to do after I came back from a three day trip from Cabo San Lucas was to go up North and escape Los Angeles, it seemed perfect.

I took a deep breath, submitted my application and bio to the national site for a proposed photo walk of Silver Lake, California. The next day, I was accepted as a photo walk leader. And on July 18th, I led one of my the best photo walks to date.

Malibu Creek State Park: M*A*S*H, Planet of the Apes and Century Lake

IMG_1698Malibu Creek State Park is one of those hidden spots in the Santa Monica Mountain range that has something for everyone, depending on the season. Even in the summer heat of July, I found plenty to see. Rabbits, lizards, hidden streams and, of course, the M*A*S*H filming site were all available for the discerning eye.

However, my two days at Malibu Creek were yet another experience of how one day in Southern California can vary greatly from the next.

Hidden LA: The Architecture, History and Urban Landscape of Downtown Los Angeles

IMG_0982There are some experiences in life that are so rich in detail that you can’t wait to share with others. My fascination with  historical Downtown and greater Los Angeles started last year through the  Smithsonian Magazine’s National Museum Day. Excited with the concept of visiting a  museum for free, I chose the one that had eluded me the longest: The Museum of Neon Art. Little did I know that less than a year later, that choice would result in one of my most successful photography events to date.
