While at Bardsdall Park for the Thai Cultural Festival, I picked up a Save the Date postcard for the upcoming Beyond Eden art opening and art fair.
Unique and innovative, contemporary art fairs offer photographers and artist a chance to become inspired, motivated and discuss different art styles with other art appreciators. Barnsdall Park, home to the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, is a great venue for artists of all backgrounds (I am in the recent Open Call 2009, closing next week) and is a stellar location overlooking all of Los Angeles. From the open fair hours, art show, kick off event and opening night gala, this promises to be a fantastic opportunity to see work showcased from various LA artists and galleries. Network, eat great food, photograph urban life and watch the sun set over the Hollywood sign, Griffith Observatory and Metro Los Angeles.

Artistry in sand is beautiful, challenging and mesmerizing. The details and challenges of working with temperamental materials is at once exhilarating and maddening. If you’ve ever viewed sandcastle building competitions on television, you know that they are awe inspiring and massive. Capturing this process from behind a camera lens is at once a challenge. How can an artist capture the spirit, joy and creation posed by another artist? Let’s challenge ourselves in photographing the process and creation of this beautiful, fun and transient art form.

Image taken from Los Angeles Magazine's photo essay, "Sign Language".
On a recent visit to the House of Brews in San Fernando (In Library Plaza, next to San Fernando branch of the Los Angeles County library), I flipped through a discarded June 2009 issue of Los Angeles Magazine.
After reading well written articles about Farrah Fawcett and the high price of the celebrity spotlight to an eye opening piece about Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s failing as the mayor of Los Angeles as he makes himself ready to run for governor of California, I found a gem of a photo essay entitled “Sign Language“.

Another fantastic find to squeeze into a packed weekend!
Being an avid fan of the Downtown Los Angeles art walk, I’m always looking for artwork that will inspire me. The Pasadena Chalk Festival event, mixed in with the awesome musical artists of the Pasadena World Music Festival, was no exception.
When I first discovered the two events, I wouldn’t keep quite about it. I told the group that came out for the Eaton Canyon hike. I blabbed about it at the Local Coffee and Tea Scene group tea at the Peninsula Hotel. Basically anyone that would listen.
Those that listened thanked me profusely later.

Having an over planned out weekend is extremely common for me. What is not common? Having a fire in Santa Barbara ruin my overly planned mini vacation weekend and leave me with a free Saturday with nothing planned. Such was the conundrum I faced one particular Friday in May.
So, when I received an email from the Photographers and Digital Artists of Los Angeles group stating that the Friends of the Los Angeles River needs a few photographers for their planned Great LA River Clean Up the next day, I was intrigued. After contacting the volunteer organizer, I was set.
But, nothing could prepare me for the intense learning experience that was in store.
